DARTMOOR
"Dartmoor is often represented with a monocular view. Often topographically. However, I am interested in the texture and mosaic of the landscape. I will often combine features from different locations in order to achieve a result that is more powerful in communicating the essence of a particular aspect of Dartmoor. I think it was Delacroix that said 'exactitude is not truth'.
The panoramic view of Dartmoor is very seductive. However, in many paintings I like to make the detail of Dartmoor the hero. The pattern that emerges when studying a boundary wall, for instance. Finally it is the seasons and the dramatic change they have on the landscape that is all absorbing. In the winter season the boundaries, rock, tree-lines and other features, camouflaged by the summer growth, come into their own. The four elements of primal earth, air, water and fire shape the ever changing face of Dartmoor. Man has also left his signature in the form of boundary walls, hut circles, mines and markers. they litter the landscape providing interesting visual punctuations to the mosaic."
